Beech hedge Stonehenge

I'm building up now to the spring equinox, which this year will coincide with a full moon. I have no religious beliefs, and little spirituality. But the changing seasons which come with the earth's tilted axis are something visible, mathematical and logical, as well as deeply mysterious, sensual and organic. For me it is the connection of the two sides - the logical and the mysterious - which makes nature so fascinating and appealing.

In photographing the setting sun through a fixed point, I inadvertently created for myself a Stonehenge in a beech hedge. I've found a way of gauging the date without a calendar, because I can see how the point of the setting sun moves.

I'm gradually finding out more about Stonehenge and about astronomy. But for now, here are photographs taken over a period of 39 days which show how Beech-henge works.

17 January. Easy photo to take if you're there at the right time

2 February. More effort required to get the right angle

14 February. Pretty much have to lie down in leaf mould to take the photo.

25 February. I can't use the same marker at all
